RESHIT CHOCHMA _ THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM

Reshit Chokhmah (The Beginning of Wisdom) is a major work of Kabbalistic ethics and spiritual practice written in the 16th century by Rabbi Eliyahu de Vidas, a disciple of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero (the Ramak) in Safed. Rather than presenting Kabbalah primarily as a theoretical description of the Sefirot and the upper worlds, the work is concerned with how Kabbalistic knowledge should transform the inner life and conduct of the human being.

Its title comes from the verse “The beginning of wisdom is the fear of God” (Reshit chokhmah yirat Hashem, Psalms 111:10). De Vidas explains at the beginning of the Gate of Fear that wisdom is valuable insofar as it leads a person to do the will of the Creator and cleave to Him. Knowledge without yirat Shamayim therefore misses the purpose of spiritual wisdom itself.

The central part of the work develops a spiritual path through major “gates,” especially Fear (Yirah), Love (Ahavah), Repentance (Teshuvah), and Holiness (Kedushah), followed by extensive practical and ethical material concerning mitzvot and conduct. The structure preserved by Sefaria also includes sections on mitzvot, raising children, honest commerce, jurisprudence and ethics.

What distinguishes Reshit Chokhmah is the constant interweaving of Zoharic Kabbalah, rabbinic teaching and practical avodah. De Vidas repeatedly draws upon the Zohar and Tikkunei Zohar to explain inner states such as fear, love, repentance and holiness. For example, repentance is not presented merely as regret for wrongdoing: he connects Teshuvah with the liberation of the Shekhinah and with the higher Kabbalistic structure associated with Imma Ila'ah.

The purpose is therefore not simply to understand the hidden structure of reality, but to become transformed by that understanding. Fear establishes the proper relationship with the Divine; love creates attachment to God; Teshuvah returns the person toward his spiritual source; and Kedushah brings sanctity into embodied life and the performance of mitzvot.

This gives Reshit Chokhmah a distinctive place among the Kabbalistic works of Safed. The Ramak systematically explains the architecture of the Kabbalistic universe; Eliyahu de Vidas asks how the human being should live once that universe is understood. Kabbalah becomes a discipline of consciousness, character, repentance, devotion and sanctification of everyday existence.

Central vision

The knowledge of Kabbalah is not an end in itself. True Chokhmah must become Avodah. The purpose of spiritual knowledge is to reshape the person's consciousness, desires, character and actions so that the human being becomes increasingly oriented toward God and capable of devekut—attachment to the Divine.
