Rabbi Yosef ben Avraham Gikatilla
(1248 - début du XIVᵉ siècle)

Rabbi Yosef ben Avraham Gikatilla was one of the great Kabbalists of medieval Spain. Born in Medinaceli, Castile, he spent much of his life in Segovia. Between 1272 and 1274, he studied under Rabbi Abraham Abulafia, who considered him one of his most accomplished disciples.

In his youth, under Abulafia’s influence, he became particularly interested in the mysticism of letters, Divine Names, permutations, and numerical values, an orientation reflected in his first major work, Ginnat Egoz, written around 1274.
Gradually, he turned increasingly toward a theosophical Kabbalah centered on the Sefirot and their relationship with the Divine Names, which would find its fullest expression in Sha'arei Orah.

Gikatilla also sought to articulate Kabbalah and philosophy rather than oppose them.
His works thus reflect a development from the linguistic and prophetic mysticism inherited from Abulafia toward an increasingly structured understanding of the Sefirot, the Divine Names, and the relationships between the different levels of the Divine realm.

His work had a lasting influence on later Kabbalah.
Sha'arei Orah, in particular, became a fundamental work for understanding the correspondences between the ten Sefirot and the different Names of God.

Regarding his death, the sources are not entirely consistent: some place it after 1305, while the Encyclopaedia Judaica gives a date around 1325.

SHAAREI ORAH
THE GATES OF LIGHT

Sha'arei Orah “Gates of Light” is Rabbi Yosef Gikatilla’s major work and one of the great syntheses of medieval Spanish Kabbalah. Its central purpose is to explain the relationships between the ten Sefirot, the Divine Names, and the different attributes through which Divine action manifests within Creation.

The book is structured into ten Gates, following the Sefirot in an ascending movement: it begins with Malkhut, associated with the Name Adonai (אדנ״י), and gradually ascends to Keter, associated with the Name Ehyeh (אהי״ה). This movement is significant: Gikatilla begins with the Divine level closest to the created world and progressively guides the reader toward the most hidden levels.

A fundamental principle of the book is that the different Names of God appearing in the Torah are not interchangeable. Each expresses a particular modality of Divine manifestation and action and corresponds to specific aspects of the Sefirotic structure. Yet this multiplicity never compromises Divine Unity: Gikatilla presents the Name YHVH as the principle that connects and unifies the entire Sefirotic order.

Understanding the Divine Names therefore provides a way of understanding how mercy, judgment, blessing, abundance, prayer and redemption operate through the Sefirotic order. The Sefirot are not presented as ten independent powers, but as a profoundly interconnected system whose unity is rooted in the Divine.

Throughout the work, Gikatilla establishes correspondences between Divine Names, Sefirot, biblical verses, attributes, the letters of the Tetragrammaton and other symbols of the Kabbalistic tradition. In this way, he seeks to give the reader “keys” through which the hidden structure connecting the different expressions of the Torah can be recognized. At the conclusion of the book, he explicitly presents the ten Gates as ten keys opening access to hidden dimensions of the Torah.

SHAAREI TSEDEK
THE GATES OF RIGHTOUSNESS

Sha'arei Tzedek — “Gates of Righteousness” is a Kabbalistic work by Rabbi Yosef Gikatilla, closely related to Sha'arei Orah. Like Sha'arei Orah, it seeks to explain the structure of the ten Sefirot and their relationship to the Divine Names, but it approaches that structure from the opposite direction.

Whereas Sha'arei Orah begins with Malkhut and ascends toward Keter, Sha'arei Tzedek proceeds from Keter downward toward Malkhut. The two works can therefore be read as complementary movements through the Sefirotic system: one ascending from the world below toward its Divine source, the other following the unfolding of the Divine order downward.

Gikatilla examines the Divine Names, attributes, Sefirot and their interrelationships, showing that they form an interconnected hierarchy rather than independent powers. The different levels express distinct modalities within the Divine order while remaining rooted in Divine Unity.

A central concern is therefore the relationship between unity and multiplicity: how the many Names, attributes and Sefirot can express differentiated Divine activity without implying any division within God.

The descending structure also allows the reader to contemplate how the higher levels of the Sefirotic order become progressively articulated until reaching Malkhut, the lowest Sefirah and the point through which the Divine order relates most directly to the created world.

The central vision of Sha'arei Tzedek can therefore be summarized as follows:
The ten Sefirot constitute an ordered and interconnected structure through which Divine manifestation unfolds from the highest levels toward the lower worlds. Their differentiation does not represent a plurality within God, but different levels and modalities through which the unified Divine reality becomes manifest.

GINAT EGOZ
GARDEN OF THE NUT

Ginnat Egoz is Rabbi Yosef Gikatilla’s earliest major surviving Kabbalistic work, completed around 1274, when he was approximately twenty-six years old. It belongs to the earlier phase of his thought, when he was strongly influenced by his teacher Abraham Abulafia, before the more explicitly Sefirotic system found in his later Sha'arei Orah.

The title itself contains a key to the book. Ginnat is traditionally read as an acronym for three methods of interpreting the hidden structures of Torah:

numerical values, interpretation through initials or letter patterns, and the permutation/substitution of letters. Egoz — אגוז, the nut — evokes the idea of an inner reality concealed beneath an outer shell.

The work is organized around three fundamental dimensions of sacred language: the Divine Names, the twenty-two Hebrew letters, and the vowels and accents. Gikatilla investigates language not simply as a human instrument of communication but as possessing a profound relationship with the structure of reality and Divine knowledge.

This is what distinguishes Ginnat Egoz from the later Sha'arei Orah. The mature Gikatilla will organize his Kabbalah primarily around Sefirot and Divine Names; in Ginnat Egoz, his attention is still strongly focused on letters, Names, numbers, combinations and linguistic symbolism. Scholarship specifically notes that the later theosophical doctrine of the Sefirot characteristic of his mature writings is not yet present here in the same form.

The central vision of Ginnat Egoz can therefore be summarized as follows:
Hebrew sacred language contains structures of meaning beneath its visible surface. Through Divine Names, letters, vowels, numerical relationships and permutations, the Kabbalist seeks to penetrate beyond the external form of language toward the deeper spiritual and intellectual order that it expresses.

SEFER HANIKUD
THE BOOK OF VOWELS

Sefer Ha-Niqqud is a Kabbalistic work by Rabbi Yosef Gikatilla devoted to the mystical significance of the Hebrew vowel signs — the niqqud. It belongs to the early phase of his thought and is closely related to the third section of Ginnat Egoz. Scholars identify both a longer and a shorter version of the work, and their exact chronology has been debated.

The central idea is striking: the vowels are not merely grammatical signs that allow letters to be pronounced. They represent principles of movement and actualization. The consonantal letters possess form and potential, while the vowels activate them, giving them sound and movement. Gikatilla extends this linguistic relationship into a cosmological one: the dynamic between letters and vowels reflects deeper processes within Creation.

The work examines the individual Hebrew vowels and connects them with Divine Names, the Tetragrammaton, different levels of reality and processes of emanation. Particularly important is the symbolism of the point נקודה. Gikatilla relates the point underlying certain vowels to a primordial source from which Divine influx (shefa) extends from higher toward lower levels of existence.

This makes Sefer Ha-Niqqud particularly interesting within Gikatilla's development. In Ginnat Egoz, letters, Names, numbers and permutations occupy a central place; here, the vowel becomes a key for understanding how potential becomes active and how movement enters both language and Creation. His later writings will develop a more explicitly Sefirotic framework.

The central vision can therefore be summarized as follows:
Letters provide form; vowels introduce movement. The relationship between them becomes a symbolic model for the transition from potentiality to actuality and for the dynamic flow through which the higher order becomes expressed in the lower world.

Rabbi Yosef Gikatilla
